Alu Marine hands over a new waterways shuttle boat for the city of Calais

The 20 meters long and 6 meters wide shuttle boat built by Alu Marine arrived at the city of Calais in North of France by exceptional convoy on May 29th.

This new futuristic vessel with design inspired by the most advanced tramway projects, was designed to carry passengers on the Calais waterways between the Citadel and the Coulogne bridge. She can carry 70 passengers.

After 7 months of construction at the Alu Marine shipyard, the shuttle boat has been launched in front of the Cité de la Dentelle in Calais under the gaze of hundreds of spectators. Natacha Bouchart, Senator-Mayor, Philippe Blet, president of Cape Calais, Serge Peron, President of Sitac, Daniel Roussel, Director of Bus Opale Calais, Calais and several elected officials also attended the launch and the first maneuvers of the boat on the channel.

Then the shuttle boat joined the quai de la Meuse where she was christened by her godmother Natacha Bouchart: "I am very proud [...] Calais is a city of water and the new shuttle boat will allow citizens and tourists to discover our cultural heritage from a new and very pleasant way"(1).

The shuttle will both carry passengers for transport through the city, and also boost the tourism activity.

"The arrival of the shuttle boat is a very important step." She is part of a global program of renovation of the Calais river banks. "All the river banks are currently under renovation, thanks to a total investment of more than 5 million euros and a real substantive work for the development of the river," Philippe Blet, President of Cap Calaisis (2)

Custom built in aluminum by the Alu Marine Shipyard in collaboration with the naval architectural office SDI, the design of the boat perfectly suit  the needs related to her navigation program in terms of capacity, accessibility and performance. Innovative with the simplified berthing facilities that shorten the time and reduce the fuel consumption during the manoeuvring.

"I congratulate Alu Marine for this beautiful work! Alu Marine is a good company that makes quality work", Serge Peron, President of Sitac.

The city of Calais will inaugurate this new shuttle boat on June 15th with the French Minister of Transport, Frederic Cuvillier, before the strongly expected public opening on June 17th.
